About Angela

Angela Hawkins is a GYROTONIC® and Gyrokinesis® Trainer, a GYROTONIC® Pre-Trainer, and Stott Pilates Certified Instructor. She was introduced to Pilates and the GYROTONIC® method during her time studying dance at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. After graduation, she moved to New York City to pursue a professional dance career and while doing so, she worked for several notable fitness studios and master trainers throughout Manhattan.

As a dancer, Angela connected instantly with these movement modalities. Her passion grew after she realized how beneficial it is for everyone, including her mom who has rheumatoid arthritis. Throughout years of teaching, she has worked with several diverse populations of people with a broad range of fitness and wellness goals. This experience has given her the knowledge to help each unique body to find ways to move mindfully and joyfully. Angela is now located near Ann Arbor, Michigan where she lives with Scott, her husband and their puppy Mozzie (Mozart).

REACH + ROOT

These are two words that stand out as I consider the ways I approach movement both physically and conceptually. After 10+ years of movement teaching and 20+ years of movement training, it organically became time to create an identity for the way I share movement with others, thus, Reach + Root was created.

I believe when you understand the principles and concepts rooted in a system (movement or otherwise), you access the freedom to reach for more expression and nuance. This is exactly the way I translate movement to my students- conceptually if you understand the roots of the foundational exercises, then you can reach out of the box and do the "fancy"  things you might see on Instagram. Physically, within all of the movement you do in any technique, if you root yourself into the floor while also finding space to reach upwards, you will begin to cultivate positive change in the way your body feels and performs.
